On April 9, the Riga International Short Film Festival “2Annas” will start online, which has been operating in Latvia for 25 years. The anniversary program is dedicated to current ecological topics and consumer society problems. During the week, the festival’s website will offer more than a hundred short films from 28 countries free of charge. The festival’s creators have also created intriguing film programs linked to eco-feminism and eco-sexuality. The focus of this year’s festival is “Earth”, emphasizing that our way of life has changed significantly in recent decades, affecting the planet’s ecosystem.
Laima Graždanoviča, the director of the festival program, admitted that ecology is always an extremely topical topic, however, the context of the Covid-19 pandemic has allowed the topic to be explored from various aspects.
The cinema format is becoming more and more popular in the world of short films. They are attractive to new authors and new viewers, they are a platform for cinema experiments. During the festival, there will be online discussions about the film industry’s potential to be an environmentally friendly industry. The festival will be opened live from the film “Splendid Palace” with a performance by the artist Sabine Moore or “Waterflower” created especially for the festival, in which she will play on her own mushrooms, which will be accompanied by electrodes, through which “we will hear what the mushrooms are talking Agnese Krastkalne.
Looking back on the 25th anniversary of the festival, retrospectives of the most outstanding films will be offered, which include the most outstanding short films of both foreign and Latvian. The artist Linda Bolshakova has prepared a selection of films “Ecosexuals”, director Astra Zoldnere – the program “Apocalypse”.
“Ecosexuality is associated with eco-feminism, it is a rather complex term, but, as curated by Linda Bolshakova, perhaps this perspective will allow to establish new relationships with nature, for example, with houseplants,” said curator Laima Graždanoviča.
The festival’s anniversary did not allow the organizers to cancel the planned festival, so the entire program will be available online, allowing the films to be enjoyed by a wider audience than usual.
For 25 years, the 2Annas Festival has evolved from its original undergraund status, but has retained a desire to experiment and seek a new language.
