The number of customers visiting shopping malls in January fell by more than half compared to the beginning of 2020. “The results are depressing” – admits the Association of Polish Trade and Service Employers.

Entrepreneurs in shopping centers are counting losses. The beginning of 2022 “is dramatic” – assesses ZPPHiU and adds that the footfall and turnover of stores located in shopping centers they have not been as low since the April lockdown. An additional problem is the significantly rising costs of running a business.

January results are depressing. It was a very poor month for the vast majority of companies affiliated with ZPPHiU. Referring to January 2020, the average decrease in the number of visits to shopping centers in Poland was -54%, and the decrease in the number of individual customers was -52%. The obvious consequence is the decline in turnover and the profitability of maintaining outlets in shopping centers. With the dynamic increase in the costs of running a business and high fixed costs, which we are constantly burdened with by providing commercial space, many locations lose their business sense – the Management Board of ZPPHiU alerts.

The pandemic has changed consumer habits. According to the association, more and more often buyers enter shopping centers for specific targeted purchases, thus reducing the time spent in retail spaces to a minimum. Additionally, customers who visit shopping centers do not necessarily shop in-store. Often it is a visit only to pick up a parcel ordered online, that is, resulting from direct actions of commercial companies.

The Association of Polish Trade and Service Employers unites over 150 companies that employ over 200,000 employees. ZPPHiU monitors footfall in shopping centers throughout the country, using Proxi.cloud reports and data obtained from members.
