In Darmstadt, shops can have their goods delivered by bike courier. Now the city wants to support the project. We are also looking for an operating company.
Everyone knows Lieferando – this is the delivery service that usually brings the pizza by bike. In Darmstadt the delivery service is called LieferradDA and brings books, wine, toys, clothes, flowers and medical supplies.
42 businesses have so far been involved in the joint project between the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (UAS). “We deliver from Arheilgen in the north to Eberstadt in the south,” says coordinator Florianreiber. He is studying logistics management in Darmstadt. The entire five-person delivery bike team consists of students from Darmstadt and Frankfurt. The project has been running since May 2020 and is funded by the Hessian Ministry of Economics. The university announced that more than 2,600 parcels have been delivered to 1,500 customers since the beginning.
Have it delivered
Customers who want to be supplied by LieferradDA must contact the store from which they would like to be supplied. If this is not yet available, they can simply contact LieferradDA.
Retailers: inside can send delivery orders to LieferradDA via email using the order form. Orders received by 12 noon will be delivered the same day.
The collection and delivery takes place between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. If the customer is not on site, the delivery will be made the following day. The entire city area is supplied. The service is currently still free. cka

Darmstadt’s Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) has now taken over the patronage. He announced on Wednesday that the city wanted to support the project because it “fits perfectly with the city’s cycling strategy”. It combines health protection, relieves urban traffic and promotes local retail. Cooperation with city marketing, the founding of an association and the sponsorship of other cargo bikes are conceivable.
A commercial operating company should also be found by the end of the year. “In order for LieferradDA to establish itself further, a sustainable solution is now required,” says Axel Wolfermann, an expert in transportation at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
Imke Karrock, owner of the bookstore on Marktplatz, is one of the pioneers of the offer. In the first lockdown, they took out the books they had ordered and worked until late at night. “LieferradDA is a godsend for us,” says the bookseller. In this way, she can offer her customers deliveries on the same day and thus do something against the large online retailers.
Kai-Oliver Schocke, Professor of Logistics at UAS, is in charge of the research project in Frankfurt. Unfortunately, it was not implemented in Frankfurt in the first place, he tells the FR. There was a lack of support from the city. They now also want to order a bicycle with a container for Darmstadt, which should be on the road from June. It could even transport refrigerators and thus replace the countless small trucks that burdened city traffic.
