Shoppers Spend More, But Buy Less | Economy

Retail turnover was 5.5% higher in November than the same period last year. But we actually bought 4% less stuff. The higher turnover is therefore mainly due to higher prices, according to Statistics Netherlands.

The largest increase was recorded in clothing stores. They saw 13% more money coming in. This was as high as 18% for online clothing stores.

Supermarket turnover also increased by 9.5%. Revenue in specialty stores decreased by 0.6% in November.

A decline in retail sales was seen in electronics and home furnishings stores. More than 1% less money was made there than a year earlier.

The last time retail turnover decreased from a year earlier was in early 2021, when many shops remained closed due to the coronavirus measures.
