Shootout on Interstate 70: Columbus Police Officer Injured, One Suspect Dead

Columbus Police Officer Injured and One Suspect Dead After Crime Spree Ends in Shootout

Columbus, Ohio – A Columbus police officer is in stable condition after undergoing surgery late Thursday afternoon, following a shootout between law enforcement and three suspects on eastbound Interstate 70 in South Franklinton. Unfortunately, one suspect was killed during the incident.

The incident began around 2:15 p.m. when one of the suspects stole the keys to a black Porsche Cayenne SUV at gunpoint from an employee at the Byers Import Porsche Columbus dealership in Whitehall. The dealership activated the SUV’s anti-theft software and reported the stolen vehicle to the police.

The suspects then attempted to rob a Fifth Third Bank on Hilliard-Rome Road on the city’s Far West Side. However, they were confronted by police, and a chase ensued on the freeway. The pursuit came to a halt in the middle of I-70 eastbound near West Mound Street, where the suspects began shooting at officers.

During the shootout, one officer was struck in the leg and was rushed to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center by his partner. The officer, who has less than five years of experience with the Columbus Police Department, is currently in surgery. His wife, family, and fellow officers have gathered at the hospital to support him.

Brian Steel, executive vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, expressed his concern for the injured officer, stating, “All I can say right now is our @capcityfop CPD Brother is in the operating room fighting for his life. His wife, along with his brothers and sisters in blue, are here and praying for him. Please do the same! #DangersWeFace.”

The two other suspects fled on foot from the interstate into the area near Mount Calvary Cemetery and the Franklin County Children Services building. Despite a massive law enforcement response, the suspects remain at large, prompting authorities to continue their search.

Columbus Police Assistant Chief Greg Bodker emphasized the urgency of apprehending the suspects, referring to them as “two dangerous individuals.” He urged anyone with information about their whereabouts to contact the Columbus Police Department.

The incident caused major disruptions, with officers shutting down a large portion of I-70, leading to significant traffic congestion during the evening commute. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Columbus police, Franklin and Perry townships, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, were present at the scene.

The stolen vehicle was surrounded by a swarm of law enforcement vehicles on I-70. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation also arrived at the scene due to police involvement in the shooting, which resulted in the death of one suspect. Evidence markers were scattered across the freeway as investigators processed the scene.

The Franklin County Children Services building at 855 W. Mound St. was surrounded by police, and a SWAT unit was deployed. The building was placed on lockdown for approximately an hour as officers conducted a thorough search of the area.

The Ohio Department of Transportation reported several closures on the interstate, including I-70 east at I-670 east, the ramp from I-71 north to I-70 west, I-70 west at Rich/Town streets, and the ramp from Route 315 south to I-70 west. These closures are expected to remain in effect for several more hours.
