Shootings Leave One Dead, Several Injured in New York – NBC New York

NEW YORK – The epidemic of gun violence in New York City took its toll again Sunday night, with at least 10 people shot, one fatally, in less than six hours in the city.

Teenagers, the elderly, innocent people sitting on benches and walking dogs: no one was immune to the wave of gun violence, all in the middle of a balmy summer afternoon.

After an out-of-control spike earlier in the year, shootings have tapered off somewhat, as the NYPD and City Hall reacted with a variety of new measures. But the past two weeks have seen a resurgence in gun violence, with the week ending July 10 by far the worst in the past year for both total shooting incidents and casualties.

Even for a city jaded by rising violence, where NYPD data says an average of four people have been shot daily this year, Sunday night’s death toll was unusually high.

SHOOTINGS LEAVE 4 INJURED IN BROOKLYN

Four people were shot in Brooklyn on Sunday night and one victim, a teenager, was seriously injured, a senior law enforcement official said.

The NYPD confirmed that they responded to the Tilden Houses complex in the Brownsville section just after 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to a senior police official, one of the four victims was 16 years old and in serious condition. Another victim was shot in the stomach, a third was grazed by a bullet and the fourth refused medical attention, the official said.

The shootings at Tilden Houses added to the toll of a violent night in Brooklyn. Approximately 90 minutes earlier, an innocent woman was sitting on the patio of the Pink Houses in East New York when a bullet struck her in the stomach.

Police responded to the Pink Houses in East New York shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday and found the woman, who was sitting on a bench in the complex’s courtyard when she suddenly felt pain.

The woman was taken to Brookdale Hospital and is expected to survive her injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

THREE INJURED IN BRONX SHOOTINGS

Just before 9 pm, the third incident of the night occurred on Bristow Street in the Morrisania section of the Bronx.

At around 8:45 pm, a 22-year-old woman was walking her dog when she felt pain; it turned out that she had been shot in the leg. She was taken to St. Barnabas and she will be fine.

Five minutes later, a mother and her daughter, ages 46 and 13, were shot inside a building on Southern Boulevard; both were taken to Jacobi Medical Center and are expected to recover. Police say two people on bikes shooting as they passed by were responsible for both incidents.

SHOOTING IN MANHATTAN LEAVES TWO INJURED

Manhattan also saw its share of violence on Sunday night. Around 11 pm in the area of West 115th Street in front of the King Tower Houses, a 34-year-old man was shot in the head. The victim, Sean Tinsley of the Bronx, was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he died.

Moments after midnight around 22nd Street and Sixth Avenue, two men got into a fight and one shot, grazing the 32-year-old victim’s chin. He was taken to Bellevue for treatment.
