Two people were shot outside of a sneaker shop in Brooklyn on Friday, causing chaos in an otherwise quiet neighborhood. The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. outside the PluggedIn Sneaker Boutique located at 9413 Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were inside a bullet-riddled dark gray Hyundai Sonata. They had just been picked up from the sneaker shop when a white Mercedes, which had been circling the block, appeared to target someone. Suddenly, shots rang out, with witnesses hearing six consecutive bangs. A man approached the car from a nearby corner and began shooting, while a woman emerged from the vehicle, screaming for help.
One victim, a 21-year-old woman, collapsed in front of the store after being shot in the leg. A witness quickly came to her aid and applied a tourniquet. The second victim, a 24-year-old man, was shot in the arm and managed to flee down the block before returning ten minutes later.
Both victims were transported to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn in stable condition and are expected to survive. The scene of the crime was filled with shell casings, an unusual sight for the typically safe neighborhood of Bay Ridge.
The owners of the sneaker shop stated that their security guard did his best to protect customers by closing the store immediately and pulling down the gate. Unfortunately, their cameras were not recording at the time of the incident. However, other cameras in the area captured footage, which detectives are currently reviewing to identify at least one suspect.
Authorities describe the suspect as a man wearing a light blue track suit, who fled in an unknown direction. The motive behind the shooting and the intended target remain unclear.
Residents of Bay Ridge expressed shock at the incident, as the neighborhood is known for its safety. Joan Kornichuk, a witness, stated, “Usually Bay Ridge is a nice area, it’s very safe. I’ve been here my whole life.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. In the meantime, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of this violent incident in their typically peaceful neighborhood.
