Two People Shot Near Caribbean Festival in Worcester
WORCESTER, Mass — A shooting near the Carribean Festival in Worcester on Sunday afternoon left two people injured, including a 15-year-old teenager, according to the police.
The victims, a 15-year-old and a 23-year-old male, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot near Salisbury Street and Boynton Avenue. They were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, as confirmed by the Worcester police.
The incident took place during the 10th annual Worcester Caribbean American Carnival, which was being held at the nearby Institute Park. The shooting caused the festivities to come to a halt, leaving festivalgoers shocked and concerned.
The Worcester Caribbean American Carnival is a popular event that offers live performances and shopping opportunities for attendees. The festival was scheduled to continue until 6:30 p.m., with a parade planned in front of Worcester City Hall at 1:30 p.m.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene following the shooting. “Out of nowhere we just heard several gunshots, it sounded like it was two different kinds of guns, and basically somebody came out limping,” said Rene Santiago, a vendor at the Caribbean Carnival. “It was just a lot of people running, and a child also came running to the park who was shot, I believe in the neck, and that other victim was shot in the leg.”
As of now, no arrests have been made, but the Worcester police have assured the public that an active and ongoing investigation is underway.
Jennifer Julien Gaskin, the President of the Worcester Caribbean American Carnival Association, expressed her sadness over the incident. “We are heartbroken that this violence happened in close proximity to our event,” she said in a statement. “We do this event for the community and have done so successfully for ten years without incident. Our hearts and prayers are with the two people who sustained injuries.”
In a separate incident, eight people were shot in Dorchester, on the outskirts of the parade route for the Carribean Carnival, on Saturday morning. Boston Police reported that six adult males and two adult females were injured, with five men and one woman taken to nearby hospitals. Fortunately, all injuries were considered non-life threatening.
Boston officials have stated that the shooting in Dorchester was unrelated to the festivities in Worcester.
