Shooting Incident at Chisinau Airport, Moldova: Two Officers Killed, Suspect Arrested (2023 Updates)

The shooting took place at Chisinau Airport, Moldova. A border police officer and a security officer were killed in this incident.

Reported by AFP, Saturday (1/7/2023) the shooting was said to have been carried out by a man from Tajikistan. The man was then arrested after the incident on Friday (30/6) local time.

In addition, Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Recean, said a passenger was also injured and was being treated by doctors.

The 43-year-old Tajik national was under escort after being barred from entering Moldova for security reasons when he took a gun from a border police employee, Recean said on Facebook.

Special police forces caught the assailant, who was also injured. He is being investigated for “terrorist acts committed by killing several people,” he added.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said authorities were on “high alert” following the incident.

“It’s a sad day for all of us,” Sandu said on Facebook, expressing “our sincere condolences to the family and friends left behind,” he said.

The interior ministry said authorities were restoring order at the airport, but said commercial activity and flight arrangements were still disrupted. It is not yet clear how many flights were carried out.
