At least two people, including a child, were injured in a shooting recorded by local media in Times Square in New York on Saturday afternoon.
Police say they received reports of shots fired at the intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue around 5:05 p.m. local time, causing a significant portion of Times Square to be closed by authorities.
According to the police, a woman and a child were taken to the local Bellevue hospital. Chain NBC New York reported that the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and that both are expected to survive. At this time the age of the child is unknown, but local media said he was between 3 and 5 years old.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said on his Twitter account that “innocent pedestrians are in stable condition” and that the authorities are “locating” the “perpetrators” of the shooting to bring them to justice..
“The flow of illegal weapons in our city must stop”, he added, referring to the increase in shootings and crime in the city in recent months.
According to the newspaper TMZ, there could be a third injured, but it has not yet been confirmed.
The suspect would have escaped the area and the police would have cordoned off the area in an attempt to find him. On their Twitter account, the New York police reported that traffic delays in the area, street closures and police and security forces were expected. “Avoid the area”they warned.
The attacker’s motive for wounding a mother and her young son in broad daylight is still unknown. According to police reports collected by the media, witnesses said that the child bled and the woman cried.
Earlier in the afternoon on Saturday another shooting took place in another part of the country, without the victims being known for the moment. It happened at the Aventura Mall, the popular South Florida shopping center, where a gunman fired a series of shots.
“The Aventura police are handling an incident at the mall. All clients and employees are being escorted off the property. Access to the mall will not be allowed until further notice, ”the local police department reported from its Twitter account at 5 pm Miami time.
Videos posted on social media show the scenes of people running away from the complex, located 28 kilometers north of Miami, and some witness footage reveals that the shots hit several people and that a suspect was arrested.
According to images of the Live cameras available in Times Square, at 6.30pm local time (8.30pm GMT) vehicle and pedestrian traffic was closed, with several dozen officers deployed on the road.
The images recorded by pedestrians and uploaded to social networks in the moments after the shooting show a great confusion and tension, with people running and asking what had happened.
