Czech rescue services say at least 15 people have been killed and dozens more injured in a shooting in central Prague.

Police announced the shooter was “liquidated” around 4 p.m. According to the head of the Czech police, Martin Vondrašek, the main suspect was a university student in his twenties who “legally” owned several types of weapons and was unknown to the police. Authorities say the incident “is not related to international terrorism.”

The attacker is believed to have been inspired by several recent shootings, including one that occurred on December 7 in Bryansk, when a 14-year-old girl killed two students, the head of the Czech police explained at a press conference.

According to available information, the shooting took place at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University on Jan Palach Square. Initially there were reports that shots were fired at a school located in the same square.

Jana Postova, a representative of the Prague rescue service, clarified that 30 people were injured.

Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakušan, who arrived at the scene, told Czech public television that there was no other shooter at the scene and the danger had passed – but he urged people to follow police instructions.

According to Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda, the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University has been evacuated. Jan Palach Square is cordoned off. Police also urged people to leave surrounding streets and stay inside.
