Witnesses to the bloody act told the social network X (formerly Twitter) that the attacker shouted “Allah Akbar” during the shooting. He was dressed as a construction worker – with an orange jacket and a white helmet. He reportedly shot first at a person in the entrance of a business building and then at two people in a taxi.
Belgium’s Vlachs declared a level four terror threat for the first time since 2016, and Prime Minister Alexandre De Croix asked Brussels residents to be “vigilant” as the suspect was still at large. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
Today, the Swedish national football team was due to play Belgium at the Heysel stadium, located three kilometers from the site of the attack.
Belgian media reported that the gunman used an automatic rifle and fled on a scooter. A video is circulating on social networks in which a man, believed to be the perpetrator, declares in Arabic that he has just shot three Swedes and that he is a member of the Islamic State, also talking about “killing the infidels” and “revenge for the Muslims,” writes The Brussels Times.
