Birmingham. A mass shooting left four dead and 17 wounded in a nightlife area in Birmingham, Alabama, and many of the victims were simply caught in the crossfire, police said Sunday. No one has been arrested and police are asking the public to come forward with any information they have.
Police Chief Scott Thurmond said at a news conference that authorities believe the person the attacker sought to shoot is among the dead and that it was a contract killing.
Detectives believe the other victims were caught in the crossfire and that several people fired the shots. More than 100 bullet casings were found at the scene.
“The suspects came in a vehicle, got out of the vehicle, fired shots, re-entered the vehicle and left,” Thurmond said.
The incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. local time on Saturday in the Five Points South sector of the city, officer Truman Fitzgerald said in an email.
When they arrived at the scene, officers found two men and a woman on the sidewalk with several gunshot wounds. Another person shot was pronounced dead at the hospital, Fitzgerald said.
The preliminary investigation found that “multiple suspects shot at a large group of people who were outside in a public area,” he stated. “Detectives believe the shooting was not random and stemmed from an isolated incident in which several victims were caught in the crossfire,” he said.
Several injured people began showing up at hospitals, Fitzgerald said. By Sunday morning, police had identified 17 victims with injuries, some of which were life-threatening.
No one has been arrested, and police have not yet determined who the target of the shooting was, Fitzgerald said. Police asked the public to come forward with any information they have.
