Shooting in Alabama

On Sunday night, a shooting occurred on the campus of Tuskegee University in Alabama. As a result of the incident, one person was killed and 12 more were injured. The shooting happened on a weekend when university graduates traditionally visit campus.

Jaques Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, was arrested hours later. He was apprehended while attempting to leave the scene, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Myrick was found to have a pistol with a device that allows automatic shooting. He faces federal gun charges. The report did not specify whether Myrick was a student at the historically black university.

It is known that the 18-year-old victim was not a student, but students were among the victims. In addition to the twelve wounded, four others suffered non-gunshot injuries. The condition of the victims has not yet been revealed.

The FBI has joined the investigation into the incident and is calling on eyewitnesses to provide video footage. The university canceled classes for Monday due to the incident.

This case is not the first in the history of Tuskegee University. In September 2023, a student dormitory shooting resulted in two campus visitors being shot and two students injured during an unsanctioned party.

Tuskegee University, where about 3 thousand students study, is located 64 km from the capital of Alabama, Montgomery. In 1966, it became the first African American college to achieve registered national landmark status, and in 1974 it was designated a National Historic Site.
