The footage dates from last Sunday, when the now infamous ‘Jackass’ gang reunited for the recording of a special edition of ‘Shark Week’ on the Discovery Channel. Sean McInerney – nicknamed ‘Poopies’ – is one of the newest members of the crew, but will probably carry his latest stunt with him for a long time to come. For example, while wakeboarding at sea – in an area where there are many sharks – he tried to make a jump over a number of specimens, but failed to land correctly. Instead, the stuntman plunged into the sea, whereupon the swarm of sharks immediately attacked him and bit his hand.

‘Jackass’ sign Steve-O, meanwhile, says the tendons and arteries in Sean’s hand had to be reattached during surgery or the stuntman would have lost his hand. Fortunately, there are no other injuries and McInerney himself remains curiously positive about the incident: “I was in their living room and it was dinner time,” he said after the attack. “I knew there was a chance I would be bitten by a shark, but I didn’t think it would happen.”

Chris Pontius, another ‘Jackass’ member, also saw the incident happen with his own eyes: “He would have been dead if they hadn’t turned up so quickly. Jesus, he’s all battered by that shark,” he says. “And that for an episode of ‘Shark Week’. It reminds us that we’re pushing it pretty far. Of course, something can always happen.”
