The news agency Reuters reports that the death toll at the school in Kazan is 11 on Tuesday morning.
A youth has been arrested, police in the city report.
The news agency RIA reports earlier Tuesday morning that nine people have been killed in the shooting, and that four are said to be injured.
One of those killed should be a teacher at the school, the others should be students.
The other students at the school are evacuated from the scene.
“Some children jumped out of the windows on the third floor, obviously to save themselves from the person who shot at them,” eyewitness Diljara Samigullina told Tass.
According to RIA, an explosion was also heard at the school. Videos shared on social media show emergency vehicles outside the school building, broken windows and building debris.
– My God, they shoot over there, says a woman who is filming while it is probably students and teachers who throw themselves out of windows at school number 175.
There must be large police forces in place.
According to some reports, there must have been two shooters at the school, and it is said that one of them may still be at large.
The apprehended person is said to be a 17-year-old boy. The other perpetrator is said to have taken hostages inside the school.
The motive for the attack is currently unclear.
The National Guard is now in place at the school.
Kazan is Russia’s fifth largest city and is located about 800 kilometers east of Moscow, on the Volga River.
