Two people are currently hospitalized following a shooting and subsequent crash in south Charlotte on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. on West Arrowood Road off I-77.
According to MEDIC, both individuals were injured and transported to the hospital. One person sustained serious injuries after being shot near the Popeyes restaurant on Nations Ford Road, while the other suffered minor injuries in the crash that took place in the same area.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department discovered two cars with front damage on the side of the road. They promptly set up crime scene tape and blocked off traffic.
Local barber Michael Wingate, who was working at the time of the shooting, recounted the events to Channel 9’s Jonathan Lowe. “I heard some gunfire and a car skid off, and I saw two guys jump out of the car still shooting guns,” Wingate said. “The guy that was in the white car, I think they were robbing each other or something; I think the guy had the gun and he was robbing him.”
This incident comes shortly after a shooting near the entrance to Compare Food Express, which prompted Chopper 9 Skyzoom to fly over the same parking lot just over a week ago.
The rise in violent crime in the area has led the Charlotte City Council to discuss and vote on a $450,000 contract with the Urban League of Central Carolina. The contract aims to implement Charlotte’s violence interruption program in the affected area.
Wingate expressed his concerns about the prevalent crime in the area, stating, “It’s hard, a lot of crime and stuff; we’re trying to work with the kids on the guns and stuff, so we’re trying to stop the violence.”
Charlotte’s violence interruption services primarily target individuals between the ages of 14 and 25. These services focus on identifying conflicts, connecting people with job and educational opportunities, and providing substance abuse resources, all with the goal of preventing further acts of violence.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is currently investigating the shooting and crash incident.
What measures is the Charlotte City Council taking to address the increasing violence in the affected area?
