German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed doubts as to whether advisers to Russian President Vladimir Putin will provide him with full information on the situation in Ukraine.
To the political podcast that will be broadcast on Sunday, Sholch said he was “convinced that the Russian president was not properly informed” and that “his services are hiding many truths from him, such as how many Russian soldiers have fallen in the war.”
The head of the British intelligence service GCHQ said on Thursday that Putin’s advisers were afraid to tell him the truth. The U.S. government also issued a similar statement on Thursday, citing its intelligence service.
However, Scholz said the Kremlin should be aware of the scale of the miscalculations made over Ukraine. Putin felt the Russian army had let him down, Sholch said, which in turn led to tensions between the Kremlin’s host and the army’s leadership.
Scholz emphasized that Russia could not emerge victorious from the conflict, no matter how the war ended.
“This war is destroying not only Ukraine but also Russia’s future,” he said, adding that without a peaceful solution, Russia has no chance of returning to moderate economic growth.
