[OSEN=한용섭 기자] Shohei Ohtani (LA Angels), who cannot pitch as a pitcher for the rest of the season due to an elbow injury, continues to play as a hitter.

On the 26th (hereinafter Korean time), Ohtani was named in the starting lineup as the second designated hitter in an away game against the New York Mets at Citi Field in New York, USA.

Ohtani started as a starting pitcher and second hitter in the first game of the doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds at Angel Stadium on the 24th.

Ohtani, who hit the 44th home run of the season in the first inning, felt discomfort in his right arm while pitching in the second inning and was replaced. After a detailed examination, he was diagnosed with damage to his right ulnar collateral ligament.

Angels general manager Perry Minassian announced that “Ohtani will no longer be pitching for the remainder of the season.” No decision has been made as to whether or not he will have elbow surgery.

Currently, the right arm’s elbow injury makes it difficult to pitch, but it seems that there is no problem with Ohtani, a left-handed hitter, batting.

Ohtani hit a home run in the first game of the doubleheader on the 24th when he was injured, and despite hearing the results of the examination between doubleheader games, he played as the designated hitter in the second game of the doubleheader and recorded one hit in five at-bats and one double.

Ohtani already underwent an elbow ligament splicing operation on his right arm in October 2018. It is unclear if he will undergo a second Tommy John surgery.

MLB.com said on the 26th, “The situation is unique, but there is a roadmap the Angels can use. Ohtani stopped pitching due to an elbow injury during the 2018 season, postponed surgery, and achieved good results as a hitter.”

At the time of 2018, Ohtani played in 24 games in September even with a bad elbow, showing off a batting average of 31%, 7 homers, and an OPS of 1.003. He underwent elbow surgery in October after the season.
