The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that two children were killed by Israeli army gunfire in the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank. The Israeli army said that its forces “responded with live bullets” after throwing explosive devices at its soldiers.
The Ministry of Health reported in a statement that “the child Adam Samer Al-Ghoul (8 years old) and the child Basil Suleiman Abu Al-Wafa (15 years old) were killed by occupation bullets in Jenin.”
Palestinian Red Crescent official in Jenin, Mahmoud Al-Saadi, told AFP, “The two children were playing near their house on a side road near a main street in the center of Jenin.”
A video clip from a camera installed in the neighborhood, apparently being circulated on social media, showed the moment one of the two children was injured, who suddenly fell to the ground in the street, while other children who were next to him fled after hearing the sound of bullets.
The pictures showed another child dragging him to the ground, leaving traces of blood behind him, while he was screaming for help.
In response to a question from Agence France-Presse, the Israeli army said that “a number of suspects” threw explosive devices at its soldiers, and “the soldiers responded with live fire at the suspects and injuries were confirmed.”
The Israeli army had previously announced that it had carried out an incursion into the Jenin camp adjacent to the city during the night hours, adding that it had killed “two terrorists,” one of whom was wanted in connection with two attacks that resulted in the killing or wounding of Israelis.
For its part, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported that it provided assistance to six Palestinians who were injured as a result of gunfire in that operation.
The Israeli army carries out almost daily raids and military operations in the Jenin camp and city, the stronghold of Palestinian armed factions.
With the killing of the two children, the number of those killed by Israeli army gunfire in the West Bank since October 7th rises to more than 237 Palestinians, in addition to about 3,000 wounded, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
On the other hand, the Israeli army arrested the child Karim Ghawanmeh (12 years old) on Wednesday morning after forcing his father to take him for interrogation at an Israeli army center near Ramallah, according to the father’s account.
Mahmoud Ghawanmeh said that the Israeli army entered the Jalazoun camp at night and arrested eight people.
The father, who lives in a village near the camp, added to AFP, “They entered the family home where my brother lives, and asked about Karim to arrest him. My brother Othman called me and the Israeli intelligence officer was next to him.” “He told me that either they would come to the house and arrest Karim, or I would bring him to them in the morning.”
He continued, “I had no choice but to take my son and head to Beit El (where the Israeli center is). I expected to stay with him during the investigation, but the officer asked me to return home and they arrested Karim.”
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club considered what happened with the child Karim Ghawanmeh “a new and doubled crime,” noting that Israel “targets Palestinian children through arrest operations as a basic approach and a consistent policy.”
He pointed out that Israel has escalated its arrest campaigns among Palestinians, and has arrested 3,325 Palestinians since October 7.
