NEW YORK – A Yonkers American veteran was charged Wednesday with attempted murder and assault in connection with an ax attack inside a Chase bank in Manhattan that left a victim with a cut to the head and leg, say the authorities.

Aaron Garcia underwent a psychiatric evaluation at Bellevue Hospital after the attack on the bank at 42 Broadway on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. It was not immediately clear which branch of the military he served with, or during how long.

According to the police, García was already inside the bank when the victim, a 51-year-old man, entered. No words were exchanged before Garcia allegedly pulled out the ax and attacked the bank’s customer with it, authorities said.

Shocking surveillance video shows the suspect walking through the bank, ax in hand. The victim is at an ATM when the suspect attacks him from behind, causing an intense fight and repeated blows with the weapon.

He eventually ends up on the ground, still fighting for the ax, as the suspect continues to attack him. He smashes several ATMs with the ax while the victim bleeds on the ground.

Officers who responded to a 911 call about an assault found the victim with three cuts to the head and one to the right leg. He was taken to a hospital conscious and alert. A roommate of the victim told our sister network News 4 that the victim is out of the hospital but unable to speak.

Further details about the circumstances leading up to the attack were not clear, nor was it known whether Garcia had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
