Shocking: they put out the fire in Kápolnásnyék for 18 hours

A total of 9,033 fire trucks were called to apartment fires, and firefighters spent 3,076 hours extinguishing the fires.

The longest intervention lasted 18 hours: on April 6, a 350-square-meter family house with a thatched roof burned in Kápolnásnyék, where 40 firefighters with 9 vehicles prevented the flames from spreading to the neighboring barn and garage.

In the first three quarters, 473 residential buildings became uninhabitable due to fire, and 1,328 people had to move out of them, they added.

In order to clarify the exact place, cause and time of the fire, a fire investigation was started after 227 apartment fires. The most common causes are electrical failure (27 percent), open flame (17 percent), heating system failure (13 percent), baking and cooking (9 percent), burning debris or garbage (6 percent), smoking (3 percent), and a building caught fire due to the technical condition of the chimney (3 percent) – they listed.

They added: fires started in 223 homes due to deliberate arson. Most of the times, the flames started in the kitchen (19 percent), in the chimney (12 percent), and in the bedroom (9 percent).

As it was written, only 0.3 percent of the 4,645 residential buildings affected by the fire, 16 homes, had smoke detectors, even though these devices reliably indicate in the initial phase of the fire, when there is still time to act, to extinguish the fire that has just started, or to escape and call the fire department.

The number of home fires is the highest during the heating season, so even more attention will be needed in the three months ahead, they noted.

It was also announced that the firefighters were called 777 times due to carbon monoxide in the first three quarters, 72 times, 9 percent less than in the same period last year. 138 people suffered some degree of carbon monoxide poisoning, 14 more than a year ago.

According to the announcement, five people lost their lives due to carbon monoxide, 4 less than at this time last year.

Toxic carbon monoxide is produced when there is an open flame indoors and there is insufficient air supply around the fire. If the combustion chamber of our water heater or heating device is accessible and the flame is visible, then we should definitely buy a high-quality carbon monoxide detector for the home – OKF recommends.
