As unbelievable as it sounds, it is really true, according to NRC columnist and former professor Martijn Katan: research shows that smoking reduces the risk of Parkinson’s. That effect is not explained by other differences between smokers and non-smokers. Moderate alcohol consumption could also be protective against Parkinson’s.
That does not mean that we should start smoking and drinking en masse again. The gains against Parkinson’s are offset by the greater risks of other diseases.
Exercise reduces the risk of Parkinson’s and eases symptoms in those who have already been diagnosed. But, Katan warns, sports such as rugby and boxing that carry a risk of concussion actually increase the risk.
Katan further points out that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s, without causing other diseases. Regarding nutrition, it is said that milk consumption may increase the risk of Parkinson’s, although this has not been convincingly proven. Eating organically, with fewer pesticides, may also help, but it does not seem to reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s very much.
Sad but true: quitting smoking and drinking increases your risk of Parkinson’s disease. That’s what my NRC column is about. https://t.co/dClTrcjt85

Katan listed these facts because he wants to make it clear that we can always be affected by something and that a counter strategy produces other effects. As we grow older, new ailments arise that we want to do something about. But perhaps that is the wrong wish, says Katan in so many words column.
Katan believes that Parkinson’s is mainly due to further aging. It seems to be becoming more common as people get older. He thinks that age-related conditions such as Parkinson’s and dementia are inevitable and that euthanasia will become more popular in the future as a way to avoid suffering from them. It will be done once, Katan says barely disguised.
Be that as it may, putting drinking and drinking against Parkinson’s is a bad idea. Especially if you are a bit older, because it is much easier to fall down the stairs after one drink.
