Seven people, including the owners and employees of a private nursing home in Greece, have been arrested on charges of causing the deaths of elderly people living in the hospice.
They are due to appear on Saturday before an investigating judge at the court in Chania, Crete, where the nursing home is located. The accusations are “creation of a criminal organization”, “murder”, “violation” of the legislation affecting the functioning of nursing homes and “drawing up false medical certificates”, AFP reported.
In recent years, dozens of people have died in nursing homes.
The arrests were made following a “police investigation into suspicious deaths at the home, which began in April 2021, following reprimanding signals about the home’s operating conditions,” a police statement said.
The detainees are accused of “acts committed between May 2009 and May 2021” and a total of 29 people are involved, bTV reported.
Police said they confiscated “a total of 105,855 euros and jewelry obtained from illegal activities” in the homes and cars of the accused.
According to a former nursing home official quoted by Greek state television ERT today, the people at the home “were abused, food was very limited, they were only allowed one bath for fifteen days with one towel for ten people”.
