A shocking accident occurred at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Two workers were killed and one injured at Delta Air’s technical operations maintenance facility at the international airport, the airline said.
Delta did not elaborate on the incident Tuesday morning, but the airline said it was “cooperating with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what occurred.”
The IAM union confirmed that an aircraft tire exploded at the maintenance facility. “We stand with Delta workers during this difficult time and call on Delta and the appropriate authorities to quickly launch a thorough investigation into how this happened,” the IAM Association said in a statement.
The incident had no impact on airport operations, according to airport officials.
Delta added that it is “devastated” and “grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on scene.”
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said: “My deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees. My thoughts are also with those injured and I wish them a speedy and full recovery.”
Police, fire and airport teams are at the scene, the mayor said.
