Shocking $700 Million Dipper Contract: Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman’s Delayed Payments

[OSEN=한용섭 기자] The huge 10-year contract worth $700 million (approximately KRW 923.3 billion) that Shohei Ohtani (29) signed with the LA Dodgers was even more shocking because most of the money was to be paid later (dipper).

Ohtani will play for the Dodgers from next year until 2034. Although he should receive $70 million (about 92.3 billion won) every year, Ohtani’s actual annual salary next year is only $2 million (about 2.3 billion won).

This is because Ohtani only received an annual salary of $2 million for 10 years, and 97% of the $700 million, or $680 million, was signed on a delayed payment basis, paid after the 10-year contract ended. Ohtani first proposed this dipper contract so that the Dodgers could reduce the luxury tax burden and provide additional strength.

Japanese media outlet Full Count reported, “Under this contract, the Dodgers will pay 49-year-old Ohtani $68 million (about 89.7 billion won).” The Dodgers will pay $680 million in installments over 10 years starting in 2034, when Ohtani’s contract expires. When payments end in 2043, Otani will be 49 years old.

Ohtani is not the only Dodgers’ dipper contract. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman also signed contracts to delay payment of certain amounts.

Betts, who moved to the Dodgers through a trade in 2020, signed a 12-year, $365 million contract extension and agreed to receive $115 million in delayed payments from 2033 to 2044.

Freeman, who signed a six-year, $162 million contract in 2022, will receive $57 million in delayed payments from 2028 to 2040.

In 2034, the Dodgers will owe $68 million in deferred payments to Ohtani, $10 million to Betts, and $4 million to Freeman. A whopping $82 million (approximately 108.1 billion won) is paid as annual salary to players who are not playing. Starting in 2034, the deeper amounts of Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman will be a huge burden on the Dodgers.

Betts will receive delayed payments until 2044, when he turns 52. In 2043, 49-year-old Ohtani will receive $68 million (about 89.7 billion won), and 51-year-old Betts will receive $11 million (about 14.5 billion won).
