A 48-year-old woman expresses fear for her life from the threats of her partner, a senior fire department officer, and the inaction of the authorities
He smashed her into the wood constantly. He even insulted and humiliated her in public, while threatening to kill her. These are just some of the things that a 48-year-old woman complains to Documento about what she suffered from her ex-partner.
At the same time, the inaction of the competent authorities unfortunately does not cause any impression, only anger. Although the woman filed a lawsuit against her ex-partner in December 2023, the police never arrested him because, as they admit in writing, they “didn’t find him.” Also, although the Fire Academy was officially informed by ELAS of the complaints against the officer, however, an order for a sworn administrative examination (SAE) was not immediately given, until several weeks later, when the academy’s management changed.
“He went to drown me”
At noon on December 1, 2023, the 48-year-old crossed the threshold of AT Peristeri. A mother of two children, she had been having an affair with a senior fire department officer for the last few years. As she reported to the police, her partner abused her verbally and physically. In fact, she filed a lawsuit against him for the offenses of insult and domestic bodily harm, as a few hours before he had hit her once again. The woman also underwent a forensic examination, in which there is talk of “physical damage” and specifically “exfusions and swellings” in various parts of the body.
She described in detail to the police what had happened. As she testified, her partner started swearing at her and hitting her with kicks and punches all over her body. He then grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to the elevator, where he grabbed her by the throat with force and proceeded to choke her. With the use of force he put her in the car and asked her to take him to a cafe. On the way, he continued to threaten and curse her, saying that if she left, he would kill her. He left her in the car and went for… coffee. Luckily for her, a police car passed by. The woman informed the police about what had happened. He was taken to the AT of Peristeri.
Stalking with threats
It was not the first time that he was the victim of a beating, as, as he testified, “in the last four years at regular intervals such incidents have occurred.” As he explains in Documento, it all started in 2019.
“I got the first slap because I tried to park my car and took more space” states and continues: “I used to eat wood for trivial reasons. Once because I had washed a pot and hadn’t seen that it had a little mark on it, or because the doormat wasn’t what he wanted, or because I might have hung clothes by putting different colored pegs.’
And it continues: “One time he tied me up with a leash and took me down to the garage of the house. He almost choked me and told me that if I didn’t comply, he would defile me all over the apartment building. Other times he told me he would take me to work naked, while last summer he almost threw me off the balcony.”
They are still looking…
Despite the woman’s very serious complaint, the senior fire officer was not arrested. According to what is mentioned in an official document of ELAS, “searches were issued for the arrest of the perpetrator but with a negative result”. Strikingly, the police were unable to trace a fire officer with a known address and employment to the authorities.
In the same document something else is pointed out. ELAS “informed by phone and email the Fire Academy in Kifissia, where the officer works”. The police officers also stated that a preliminary investigation is being conducted and that the case file will be submitted to the Athens Prosecutor’s Office.
Despite the official notification of ELAS, the then commander of the Fire Academy never gave an order to carry out an investigation against the officer in order to investigate the allegations. It was conducted weeks later, when Lt. Gen. took command of the school Konstantinos Theofilopoulos, who was informed of the complaints. According to information from Documento, so far the EDE is proceeding at an extremely slow pace, while questions are being raised as to whether there really is an intention to investigate the allegations.
At the same time, the 48-year-old expresses fears even for her own life. Besides, he had threatened her several times that he would kill her. “I fear for my life, don’t come and kill me or send someone else” he emphasizes in Documento with sobs and underlines: “I’m waiting to be vindicated, I don’t care about anything else. This man is not what he shows, I don’t want other women to suffer the same.”
