There was a scandal at the Handball World Championship on Thursday evening. The German-American Paul Skorupa bit an opponent bloody in the main round game USA against Bahrain. He must now reckon with these consequences.
The Handball World Championship is in full swing. On Thursday, Germany celebrated a clear 39:19 victory against Argentina without a chance. Reaching the quarterfinals is within reach. But not only the DHB team provided topics of conversation in the evening. The main round match between USA and Bahrain was overshadowed by an ugly scene.
Biting attack at the Handball World Cup: There was even blood!
The US boys not only lost the match 27:32, the German-American Paul Skorupa playing for their team was also carried away to an extremely unsportsmanlike action. The 23-year-old, who was born in Düsseldorf and has been playing for second division club VfL Lübeck-Schwartau since 2021, bit his opponent Husain al-Sayyad (35) in the arm. It even flowed blood! First, the referee showed him the red card (sent off).

Blue card after shock action in the main round match between USA and Bahrain
But after the referees had looked at the video images, things got even worse for Skorupa: he also got the blue card. The German-American now faces a disciplinary penalty. The world association IHF introduced the blue card in 2016. It signals that an incident will be mentioned in the referee’s report and that the player concerned may be banned from further games. “I didn’t see it, but they say he bit him,” said US coach Robert Hedin after the game. “If that’s true, then that’s a red and a blue card.”
Luis Suarez caused a bite at the 2014 World Cup
The incident was reminiscent of the bite attack by Uruguayan soccer star Luis Suarez at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the preliminary round match against Italy, he had bitten his opponent Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder, causing a huge scandal.
