Khabarovsk is his hometown. Sungorkin graduated from Far Eastern State University’s Faculty of Journalism in 1976.

For his faithful service as a propagandist for the Kremlin, in 2014 Vladimir Putin awarded him the IV degree of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” and in 2018 he was appointed honorary journalist of the Russian Federation.
