Shock finds in drawer sold for millions

A very rare barrel from the 16th century was sold for a record sum on Wednesday this week.

The reports the British auction company Lyon & Turnbull, who sold the item.

The rare dish shows a biblical scene by the artist Nicola da Urbino, and was sold for more than $ 1.7 million. This corresponds to more than 14 million Norwegian kroner. This was ten times more than the estimated price, writes CNN.

Found in drawer

The dish is said to have been made around 1520-23, and depicts a scene from the biblical story of Samson and Delilah.

The auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull tells CNN that the company’s European ceramics specialist examined the contents of Lowood House, in Scotland, when she found the dish in a drawer.

The tin-glazed Italian ceramic dish, known as a maiolica, was described as incredibly rare by the auction house.

“A rare item of exceptional quality,” a spokesman for Lyon & Turnbull told CNN.

Deep pockets

It was expected that the barrel would be sold for between 109,000 and 163,000 dollars, but this did not happen.

Bids flowed in by phone and via email, as the event was streamed live. Sales of the maiolica exceeded all expectations, and were eventually sold for $ 1,721,000 during Wednesday’s online auction. This corresponds to around NOK 14.8 million.

The winning bid came from an anonymous source.

Gavin Strang, managing director and head of private collections at Lyon & Turnbull, was on the podium at the auction house in Edinburgh when the barrel was sold.

– When something as unique as this appears on the market, it really only depends on who keeps a cool head or has the deepest pockets, he tells CNN.

The content from Lowood House at the auction consisted of over 400 items. So far, 93 percent have been sold, at a total price of more than 25 million Norwegian kroner, writes Lyon & Turnbull on its website.
