New York Mayor Eric Adams went to the scene of the horrific event on Saturday. A woman was pushed by a man in front of an approaching subway train at the Times Square station. The 40-year-old manager Michelle Alyssa G. succumbed to her serious injuries.
Meanwhile, a 61-year-old man who appears to be homeless has been arrested and charged with murder. He is said to have previously been convicted of a robbery and to have claimed that he was God as an explanation for the act.
New York City Police Chief Keechant Sewell said the suspect did not appear to have known the victim. The alleged perpetrator initially fled but turned himself in to traffic police a short time later, Sewell said at the press conference with the mayor.
Initially, the investigative team considered a racist background because the victim belongs to the Asian community. Attacks on Asian-looking people in the United States have increased since ex-President Donald Trump made statements about the “Chinese virus” at the beginning of the corona pandemic.
But as NBC New York reports, the suspect previously tried to push another woman in front of the subway. The man held her by the arm. She was very scared and left the platform. Then she had to witness how Michelle Alyssa G. died.
