Shirtless Protest in Dresden: Normalizing the Female Breast

Special protest in Dresden: Dozens of cyclists drove through the city – shirtless.

On Saturday numerous cyclists cycled shirtless through the city in Dresden under the motto “Same chest for all”. The feminist initiative of the same name called for this. She calls for normalizing the female breast – instead of sexualizing it. As the “Bild” reports, the participants demonstrated “against the double standards that allow men to show themselves shirtless – but mostly not women.”

The special demonstration led from Alaunpark through Dresden’s new and inner city. According to a reporter at the scene, the men and women chanted numerous chants and painted slogans on their bodies to express their protest.

“Topless demo” in Dresden: isolated insults

Slogans like “Don’t comment on my body” or “Boobs have no gender” (translated: “Breasts have no gender”) can be seen on photos. According to the information, the organizers, which also include the group “SektGabi*s”, were very satisfied with the protest. According to the reporter, the people of Dresden responded to the topless campaign with a lot of encouragement. But there was also surprise and individual insults. As the “Bild” writes, the demo was peaceful overall, according to the police.

In the run-up to the event, the city of Dresden was apparently “very nervous” about the event, as “Bild” reported. The newspaper spoke of the fact that “nipple fear” prevailed in the town hall. Because: A total of 15 offices and institutions were informed by the regulatory office about the planned demo or asked for information about “which conditions should be included in the notification”. Among other things, the Dresden public transport company, the Saxon State Chancellery of Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer and the office of the Lord Mayor were written to.

Administration: Unusual protest is part of colorful city life

The Frauenkirche Foundation and the Catholic cathedral parish office were also asked for information “whether a service or another event was taking place in the cathedral or the Frauenkirche around 2 p.m.” – apparently to protect the religious sensibilities of churchgoers. The demo also passed there.

The city then informed t-online that it was completely normal to ask public institutions for a statement before meetings if their concerns could be affected by the event. “This also affects religious institutions in particular, where freedom of religion must be taken into account in accordance with Article 4 of the Basic Law.”

The variety of peaceful gatherings and the choice of unusual means of demonstration are “part of the democratic, colorful city life in the 21st century,” according to the city.
