It is with great sadness that Seraphina, Charlotte and Barry announce the passing of their much loved mother, grandmother and mother-in-law Shirley Watts
– he wrote.
Shirley Ann Shepherd was born in September 1938. She was studying sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 1961 when she met Charlie Watts who was then a part-time graphic designer and jazz musician.
Charlie was working at an advertising agency at the time and touring as a drummer with Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, and the pair met at their first rehearsal.
They were married in 1964 before the Rolling Stones were famous and Charlie had joined the band a year earlier.
Four years later, Shirley gave birth to their daughter, Seraphina. Shirley and Charlie eventually moved to Devon, where she managed a world-famous stud farm of Arabian horses, becoming a well-respected breeder and show person in the international Arabian horse community.
Throughout his 57-year marriage to the Rolling Stones drummer, Shirley remained the love of his life, and their love has remained constant over the years.
Shirley was a fine sculptor and a huge advocate for animal rescue – recalls the ‘Daily Mail’.
