Shipwreck 400 years ago, this ship was found intact in the Baltic Sea

KOMPAS.comDivers from Finland made an unexpected discovery while exploring the depths Baltic Sea.

They accidentally found a carcass ship 400 years old in well maintained condition.

As quoted from Science Alert, Monday (14/9/2020) volunteered divers the nonprofit team Badewanne has found more frequently survived 20th century ships that sank during WWI and World War II naval battles.

Ship found in the Gulf of Finland, at waters the easternmost part of the Baltic is at a depth of about 85 meters.

Badewanne’s dive team said the ship was lying on the seabed in almost complete condition. The ship shows only minor damage from the trawl.

The cold nature of the water in these waters seems to have helped the ship to its proper preservation.

The Baltic section has a combination of low salinity levels, temperature and light that have allowed carcasses to sink almost unchanged for hundreds of years.

In warmer waters, organisms such as wood beetles reproduce and can cause untold damage to remains like these.

However, thanks to the Baltic Sea water, which has a different chemical content, this does not happen.

Even in the hold of the ship, supplies and merchandise that the ship was carrying were still visible

The fluit itself was a popular type of ship and was designed between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The ship has three masts making it cost effective and spacious to maximize cargo capacity.

No wonder the fluit ships were able to carry twice as much cargo as other ships. The fluit ship also has a system rigging technology that ensures fast sailing and can be operated without a large crew.

Further investigation of this discovery can certainly reveal other interesting facts about these ships, such as the development of the types of ships sailing around the world, for example.

“Carcass shipwreck reveals many characteristics of the fluit and several other unique features, not least the stern construction, “said marine archaeologist from the University of Stockholm, Niklas Eriksson.
