Shipsea: Latvian Folk Song “Saulīt’ vėlu vakarā” in an Interesting Arrangement

Shortly before his solo concerts in Jūrmala, musician Jānis Šipkēvics, aka Shipsea, presented his listeners with the Latvian folk song “Saulīt’ vėlu vakarā” in an interesting arrangement.

A new, Latvian recording made by Jānis Šipkēvics – a version of “Sunlight in the late evening” – was premiered on this holiday. It is a Latvian folk song, performed by Shipsea shortly after the performance “Ansis Cīrulis. Genius. Latvian” creation.

It was the participation in this show that influenced Šipkevic to pay more attention to folk music. “Latvijas Radio Choir Conductor Sigvards Kļava addressed me, saying that we will sing only folk songs in the show, and that we will be the two natures of the legendary Latvian graphic artist Anšas Cīruļas with Vili Udņiņu. The way Ansis Cīrulis worked with the Latvian heritage can serve as an encouragement to any performer in any field – from a potter to an illustrator, from a conductor to a composer. It is a standard – with what respect, how carefully you can search for the essential in folk motifs, to crystallize the truly tasteful,” says Shipsea.

This is the first recording that Šipkēvics made completely independently, starting from the recording of voices and instruments to the sound post-processing – mixing and mastering. Two concerts “Shipsea. In warm light” will take place in the small hall of the Dzintari concert hall on November 25. String quartet, as well as singer and multi-instrumentalist Una Daniela will also take part in them.

It should be noted that Jānis Šipkēvics is currently studying music production in the master’s program at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm.
