At least 12 bodies of victims were found after a the ship broke in two after being hit by a storm in the water South China Seanear Hong Kong, on weekends. Previously dozens of crew members were reported missing in the incident.
As reported AFPMonday (4/7/2022), the discovery of the victim’s body was announced a few days after an engineering vessel carrying 30 crew was badly damaged and broken in half when hit by a strong storm in waters 160 nautical miles or 296 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong. Kong.
“As of 4 July at 3:30 p.m. local time, rescue forces found and evacuated 12 bodies, presumed drowned victims, in an area about 50 nautical miles (92 kilometers) southwest of the location where the ship sank,” the Center said in a statement. “Relevant departments are stepping up efforts to confirm identity,” the statement added.
According to state media reports China, three crew members were rescued on Saturday (2/7) afternoon and one other crew was rescued on Monday (4/7) morning local time. About 26 other crew members still have not been found.
Dramatic footage released earlier by Hong Kong authorities showed one survivor being airlifted into a helicopter with huge waves crashing against the half-submerged deck of the ship below.
The incident happened when Topan Chaba formed in the waters of the central South China Sea and on Saturday (2/7) afternoon hit Guangdong Province in southern China.
