Ship Isolated in Argentina for Possible Monkeypox

(ANSA) – BUENOS AIRES, 20 AUGUST – The Liberian-flagged Ina Lotte ship was isolated in the Paraná River near the Port of San Lorenzo in Argentina. Local health authorities forced it into quarantine after a crew member fell ill. Initial tests showed symptoms compatible with those of mpox or monkeypox. The man was immediately transferred to a local hospital. Although the positivity has not yet been officially confirmed, doctors believe that the disease is still in its early stages because the typical skin rashes, which consist of spots that transform into purulent vesicles, have not yet appeared on the body. Until definitive confirmation is received, no one will be able to disembark from the ship. Access is permitted only to health personnel. On 14 August, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a state of emergency for monkeypox, whose epicentre of contagion was recorded months ago in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Africa.
