This is reported by the Reuters news agency, among others.

Reuters writes that the ship Fremantle Highway, registered in Panama, was on its way from Germany to Egypt when a fire started on board on Tuesday evening.

According to Dutch The Telegraph The ship is now stranded 16 kilometers outside the municipality of Ameland.

– The ship’s cargo is still burning, but the ship is stable at the moment, says Peter Berdowski, managing director of the company Boskalis.

Several crew members were forced to jump overboard on Tuesday. One person died and several were injured, writes Reuters.

Australian News writes that there were 23 people on board when the fire started.

According to De Telegraaf, there are around 3,800 cars on board the ship, while several other media mention a somewhat lower and more imprecise number.

De Telegraaf writes on Thursday evening that the first attempt to save the ship has failed.

This must have been due to the direction of the wind, which caused too much smoke to come towards the towboat in question.

News writes, however, that they have managed to prevent the ship from drifting so that it potentially blocks the trade route into Germany.

De Telegraaf writes that the ship is still too hot for anyone to board.

The cooling of the ship must have been stopped on Thursday, as there were fears that the ship could sink.

– If you start filling the ship with water, you risk destabilizing it, and it could tip over, says a spokesperson for the Dutch coast guard, according to News.

News further writes that more than 140 species of fish are found in the area, as well as that it contains large populations of seals and porpoises.

With regard to maritime life, some media refer to it as a potential disaster if the ship were to sink.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but according to De Telegraaf, it is suspected that the fire started in a car battery.

There must be both fossil and electric cars on board.
