Ship Fire in Red Sea After Houthi Air Strike: Latest Updates

Moscow. December 15. INTERFAX.RU – A ship caught fire in the Red Sea after an air strike from the Houthi rebel-controlled part of Yemen. About it reports on Friday by the Associated Press, citing a U.S. official.

The Liberian-flagged cargo ship Al Jasrah was attacked by either a drone or a missile, the agency said. It is currently unknown whether any crew members were injured in the attack. Representatives of the Houthis have not yet commented on the incident.

Also on Friday night, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that a ballistic missile was fired from Houthi-controlled territory towards the international shipping lane north of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Western media reported this the day before. The Houthis later threatened the Hong Kong-flagged cargo ship Maersk Gibraltar, which was in the strait at the time, with further attacks.

No US warships were involved in the Maersk Gibraltar incident, but CENTCOM said the US continues to monitor the situation as the attacks threaten the safety of international shipping.

Yemen’s Houthis have previously vowed to attack all ships in the Red Sea heading to Israel, regardless of who owns them. Since then, several attacks on ships have been reported in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea.
