He’s been on the Lower Rhine for less than nine months – and can already tell some spectacular stories.
On October 27, 2022, Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that a teenage talent from Japan would be moving to the Lower Rhine in the coming months.
Gladbach talent Shio Fukuda creates a spectacular scene
When compatriot Ko Itakura (26) signed, numerous Gladbach fans suspected that the deal would be a success. In the case of Shio Fukuda (19), there was very little information in advance about what type of player would wear the Borussia jersey in the future.
The then 18-year-old striker arrived in the Lower Rhine at the beginning of February – and immediately scored eight goals on his competitive debut for the U19s. After six weeks at Borussia he already had 14 goals to his name.
After half a year in the foal stable, Fukuda is now an integral part of the Borussia U23 team – and plays regularly under ex-Bundesliga professional Eugen Polanski (37).
Thanks to his goal rate, the Japanese player was already in the spotlight when he was a teenager, but in the current season, numerous Borussia fans are getting to see him live from time to time.
Fukuda was used for the Borussia professionals under Gerardo Seoane (44) both in summer preparation and most recently during international breaks.
This of course helps fans of the foals to get a better picture. What makes Fukuda so dangerous? Where does he perhaps need to add more?
On Thursday (October 12, 2023), the attacker demonstrated his greatest and most noticeable quality on the pitch – and caused amazement.
In the professionals’ 4-1 friendly win against St. Truiden, Fukuda came on as a substitute and also prepared a goal for Manu Koné (22). But his standout scene was a single jump.
Anyone who has often watched Fukuda in training knows that he has enormous jumping power. In this situation, some people probably couldn’t believe their eyes.
Here you can see Shio Fukuda’s XXL jump in the test game:

The only bitter thing for Fukuda was that the ball still came a little too high for him. However, the striker can confidently say that it is not because of his jumping ability.
Fukuda, who is just 1.78 meters tall, literally stands in the air after the cross from the left side. Fortunately, the scene is still available in a still image:

After the astonished Gladbach fans watched each other several times on social media, they got creative. In addition to several comparisons with world-class basketball players in the NBA, a comparison was of course also obvious.
Hardly any other footballer in the recent history of top football is as famous for his enormous jumping power as Cristiano Ronaldo (38). When the Portuguese scored a goal around four years ago, when he was still wearing a Juventus jersey, CR7 was measured 2.56 meters above the ground.
The Japanese jewel Fukuda in Cristiano Ronaldo mode? A Borussia fan on Twitter showed humor and edited the image with Borussia’s own header monster.

If the jump had actually led to a goal, the enthusiasm would probably have been even greater. In this way, Fukuda managed to show a broader public that even at 1.78 meters, he doesn’t have to hide in a header duel.
Hannes Wolf (24) caused another strange scene, which the Gladbach professional will not be happy about: The Austrian scored a 45-meter own goal for the Belgian first division team’s only goal.
The offensive player, who had to help out on the double six against St. Truiden, completely misjudged himself in the second half. He apparently thought that goalkeeper Jan Olschowsky (21) was waiting between the posts for a return pass.
And so the keeper stood a few meters in front of his goal and was completely surprised by the pass. Olschowsky was no longer able to save the situation – certainly a rather unpleasant moment for Wolf.
