Shin Tae Yong stop the curse of 19 years coach Indonesian National team after successfully bringing the Garuda team to qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup.
Victory over Nepal 7-0 at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, Kuwait City, Wednesday (15/6) early morning WIB, confirmed the Indonesian national team’s move to the 2023 Asian Cup. Indonesia qualified as runner-up in Group A in the qualifying round.
This is the first time in 15 years that the Indonesian national team has made a move to the Asian Cup. Previously, the last time Indonesia competed in the biggest tournament in Asia was in 2007 when it was co-hosted by Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.
Shin Tae Yong’s success also ended the bad curse of 19 years the coach failed to bring the Indonesian national team to qualify for the Asian Cup finals.
Shin Tae Yong became the first coach since Ivan Kolev in 2003 who was able to bring the Indonesian national team to qualify for the Asian Cup finals through qualification.
Kolev brought the Indonesian national team to qualify for the 2004 Asian Cup through qualification in October 2003. The Red and White Team qualified for the 2004 Asian Cup after finishing second in the Group C standings in the qualifying round with Saudi Arabia. At that time, Indonesia was in a group with Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Bhutan.
After the 2004 Asian Cup, there has never been a coach who has been able to bring the Indonesian national team to qualify for the Asian Cup through the qualifying round. The Indonesian national team, which was also trained by Kolev, qualified for the 2007 edition as the host.
At the 2011 Asian Cup, Benny Dolo failed to bring the Indonesian national team to the finals after being eliminated in the qualifying round. While in the 2015 Asian Cup qualifiers, it was the turn of the coach duo Rahmad Darmawan and Jacksen F. Tiago who failed.
Now after 19 years since Kolev’s success in 2003, Shin Tae Yong ended the bad curse after bringing the Indonesian national team to the 2023 Asian Cup.
Shin Tae Yong brought the Indonesian national team to beat Kuwait in the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification Group A competition. In addition, Shin Tae Yong also brought Indonesia to qualify under the news that he would be replaced from the senior national team position.
