The Super Mario Bros. The movie has already been shown in the cinema for a while and is doing very well. Game designer Shigeru Miyamoto explains how the earlier mixed reviews ultimately led to the big success.
From the opening weekend it was clear that the film is a lot better than its predecessor from 1993 and it was already a box office hit. Still, the two films have one thing in common and that is the mediocre score on rotten tomatoes. They both have a ‘rotten’ score.
Bad score led to success
During an interview with the Japanese press, Miyamoto explained how the films exceeded his expectations and why the bad initial reactions led to the successes.
“Of course I had expectations, but they were really exceeded. Sometimes you need a bit of luck, of course. I think that the bad reviews caused greater awareness and more attention from the media.”
Reason for criticism
The criticism was mainly about that it was a simple and predictable story, too rushed and that it contains too many easter eggs. It soon became clear that the public was not bothered by this.
We don’t know much about a possible sequel yet. There were already rumors before the release of the film that there would be a spin-off about Donkey Kong. So not much is clear for the rest. For now it is The Super Mario Bros. Movie At least it can still be seen in the cinema.
