Shigeichi Negishi: The Japanese Engineer Who Invented Karaoke Remembered at 100

Sing along to a song into the microphone while only the music plays and you see the lyrics in front of you. That’s karaoke, in a nutshell. It is also a popular activity here, although not everyone is a huge fan. And while most people know that karaoke originated in Asia, the answer to the question of who invented karaoke remains largely unanswered.

The next time a microphone is thrust into your hands, you can tell that karaoke originated in the mind of Shigeichi Negishi, a Japanese engineer, in the late 1960s. The man died at the respectable age of 100, the American author Matt Alt has announced. He has lived in Tokyo since 2003 and is an expert in Japanese popular culture and society.

“Farewell to a legend,” Alt writes on X (formerly Twitter). He got the news from Atsumi Takano, Negishi’s daughter. The engineer died in January as a result of a fall. He turned 100 years old.
