Film and theater actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd, who has appeared in multiple Spike Lee productions, was found dead in Atlanta on Sunday morning. According to the police, he has been shot in the back several times.

Lee announced the news of Byrd’s death on social media on Sunday. “It is with great sadness that I have to announce that our beloved Thomas Jefferson Byrd was murdered in Atlanta,” said the director, calling the murder tragic. He shared photos of Byrd in a number of his movies during the day.
The actor, who turned 70, has appeared in Clockers, Get On The Bus, Chi-raq, Red Hook Summer, Bamboozled and He Got Game, among others. He also played Stokely in the television version of Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It which appeared on Netflix in 2017.
What exactly happened around Byrd’s death is not clear. Police in Atlanta are investigating the cause of the shooting.
