Sherpa man breaks record by climbing Mount Everest for the 27th time

A Sherpa man made history by climbing Mount Everest for the 27th time today (May 17), beating his previous record.

Kami Rita Sherpa, 53, climbed to the world’s highest peak at 8,849 meters early this morning. He led a foreign climber up a ridge on the southeast side.

“Yes, Kami Rita has conquered Sagarmatha peak for the 27th time.” Bikyan Koirala, an official from the Nepal Tourism Ministry, confirmed to the media. By mentioning the name of Mount Everest in the local Nepali language.

Thanesuan Gurakai, manager of Seven Summit Treks, where Camee Rita works, said the sherpa had led foreign climbers to the top of Mount Everest at 8:30 a.m. local time.

“We are in the process of gathering details. But now I can confirm 100% that Cami Rita has reached there for the 27th time.”

Camee Rita Sherpa climbed Mount Everest for the first time in 1994 and climbs there almost every year. The only exceptions are in 2014, 2015 and 2020, as Nepalese authorities have banned climbing to Mount Everest for various reasons.


This year, the Nepalese government has issued permits to 478 climbers who want to climb Mount Everest, a record for the March-May climbing season. And more than the record high of 408 in 2021.

Nepal’s government, whose main income is mountaineering, trekking and tourism. It has been criticized for allowing too many people to climb Everest. And most of them are climbers who do not have enough experience.
