In celebration of the important anniversary, the masterpiece of director Buster Keaton – the film “Sherlock Juniors” will be shown, for which the original music was composed and performed by composer Kārlis Lācis together with soloist Aija Vītoliņa and other musicians.
“Sherlock Jr., a 1924 silent film classic by Buster Keaton, is a true masterpiece that has surprised and inspired audiences around the world. It is recognized as the director’s greatest film ever made,” the cinema emphasizes. Daira Āboliņa, artistic director of Splendid Palace. “In the film, Keaton’s performance is excellent not only as a director, but also as a comedian. The film is technically resourceful and innovative. Buster Keaton virtuosoly and with light humor plays with the iconic concept of “screen magic”. The artistic tricks performed by himself in the film surprise and delight.”
“Buster Keaton’s film is technically complicated for its time, with effective shots. Today it would be achieved with a computer, but back then it was a huge effort for the director and actors.
I would like, as much as possible, not to overdo it with my message, but to complement and enrich the film’s view in an interesting way with the music created, in order to give all viewers the opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of the cinema in a positive atmosphere.
However, the film must retain its central place this evening, because the heart of the cinema is the screen and it will always play a central role,” says the author of the original music, Kārlis Lācis, about the creative process of composing the piece.
Buster Keaton’s silent film “Sherlock Junior” is the story of a film mechanic who longs to become a detective. When his bride is robbed by a local thief, he is falsely accused of the crime. Falling asleep in front of the movie projector, he turns into a brilliant detective in his dream, just like Sherlock Holmes, and solves this crime.
Saxophonist Māris Jēkabsons, accordionist Artūrs Noviks, guitarist Rihards Goba, double bassist Jānis Stafeckis, percussionist Kaspars Grigalis and percussionist Ainis Zavackis will perform the original music created for the film together with composer Kārli Lāci and singer Aija Vītoliņa.
Cinema “Splendid Palace” celebrates its 100th anniversary, which actually falls on December 30, 2023, with special events, events and film programs throughout this year.
