The taikonauts of the Shenzhou-17 mission will continue conducting experiments and will star in a spacewalk to repair the solar panels of the Chinese Tiangong station.

The Chinese Manned Space Agency launched the mission this Thursday Shenzhou-17 with three taikonauts on board heading to the Tiangong national space station. The launch was considered successful 17 minutes after the Long March 2F carrier rocket took off from the center of Jiuquan, in the Gobi Desert, at 11:13 (local time), reports The South China Morning Post.

As scheduled, the Shenzhou spacecraft will dock with the Tiangong station about six and a half hours after entering the planned orbit, about 380 kilometers above Earth.

The trio of Shenzhou-17, the Asian giant’s 12th manned space mission, will be welcomed by the crew of the previous mission, which has remained on the station for almost five months.

The Shenzhou-17 taikonauts will continue conducting experiments and will star in a spacewalk to repair solar panels that were damaged by the impact of small space debris.

The Shenzhou-17 mission crew consists of Tang Hongbo (commander), Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin. The head of the mission maintains the record of him as the Chinese taikonaut with two more space flights in a row, since barely two years have passed since his previous trip. He will be the first taikonaut to enter Tiangong Station for the second time.
