BEIJING (ANTARA) – The crew of Shenzhou-16 currently aboard China’s space station will carry out their first extravehicular activity (EVA) in the coming days, the China Manned Space Agency said. /CMSA) on Wednesday (19/7).
The Shenzhou-16 crew is a new combination consisting of three types of astronauts, namely the commander, flight engineer, and payload specialist. They have been in orbit for 51 days since entering the space station combination on May 30.
The crew has carried out a series of space science experiments in fields such as life ecology and microgravity environmental physics, and completed the installation of space radiation biology exposure experiment devices on the Mengtian laboratory module and gas cylinders on the space station’s electric propulsion system.
According to CMSA, the radiation biology exposure experiment is critical to ensuring astronauts stay healthy long-term in orbit, as well as advancing China’s plans for a manned landing on the Moon.
With the installation of gas cylinders in the in-orbit electric propulsion system, the use of the “gas exchange” method was used for the first time to complete the filling of electric propellant in the long-term maintenance of the orbit of the space station, and make its operation more economical and efficient.
CMSA said the Shenzhou-16 crew was in good condition, and the combined space station was operating stably.
