Shell’s Sustainable Energy Division to Cut 200 Jobs: Latest Updates & Future Investments

Shell’s sustainable energy division will lose about 200 jobs next year. A spokesperson for the energy giant confirmed this after reporting from the Reuters news agency. In addition, another 130 jobs are being examined.

Shell now calls it too early to say whether jobs will also disappear in the Netherlands. The so-called Low Carbon Solutions division currently employs 1,300 people. Shell emphasizes that more staff in other parts of the company are involved in developing alternative energy.

According to Shell, the job reduction will therefore examine whether the position can be integrated into another branch. After record profits due to skyrocketing energy prices, Shell is now struggling with the consequences of falling oil and gas prices.

Oil production

In order to maintain profits, Shell does not want to move away from fossil fuels too quickly. Board chairman Wael Sawan this summer reversed the decision to reduce oil production until 2030.

Shell tells NOS that it will invest 10 to 15 billion dollars in new energy projects over the next two years. Investments are only made in techniques that “have the highest chance of creating value and reducing CO2 emissions”.
