An oil spill monitoring agency in Nigeria and an environmental advocacy group said that a pipeline owned by a subsidiary of the international company Shell in Nigeria had leaked crude oil in the Niger Delta.
The Upolu-Ogali pipeline in Rivers State, south of the country, feeds the Trans-Niger pipeline, which pumps 180,000 barrels per day, and is one of two lines for exporting Bonny light crude.
The pipeline resumed operations this month after being closed for maintenance in December.
Local groups monitored the leak yesterday, Friday, and reported it to Shell Oil Development Company Limited in Nigeria and the Nigerian Oil Spill Monitoring and Response Authority.
Aime Ekanem, head of the authority in Rivers State, said that the authority had received a report about the leak and would go to the site tomorrow, Sunday, to conduct a joint investigation.
Over the years, Shell has faced several issues surrounding oil spills in the Niger Delta, a region where pollution, conflict and corruption are widespread, and these problems are linked to the oil and gas sector.
